Just look at her smile and the light in her eyes. It’s hard to believe how far she has come. Lara looks bright and full of life now — a beautiful change from the darkness she once knew.

Lara’s life didn’t begin kindly. She was taken from her mother when she was just 40 days old and kept for breeding. She was never given proper medical care, and when she became sick as a puppy, she was treated by someone who wasn’t a qualified veterinarian. Soon after, she lost the use of her back legs and was left paralyzed, without treatment or comfort.

From there, her world became very small. She was often tied to a bed, left alone all day, and fed only scraps or rice with curd. When she could no longer be used for breeding, the neglect turned into cruelty. Despite everything, she held onto a quiet hope that someone would see her.

One of our rescuers in Kolkata India, who couldn’t turn away after meeting Lara and seeing the hope in her eyes. When the mistreatment continued and Lara was even left tied outside overnight, we stepped in and brought her to safety.

Today, Lara is unrecognizable from the dog she once was. She sleeps in a cool, comfortable room, receives proper medical care, and is surrounded by love. Her smile says it all. She finally knows what it feels like to be safe.
